For years we have been lead to believe that so called ‘low-fat’ or ‘light’ food products are healthier substitutes than the classic flavours of out favourite food brands. Walking through a supermarket today, the shelves are bursting with these perceived guilt-free foods are the nation continues to battle with obesity.

Low Fats Are Dangerously Unhealthy
Low-fat products first came about in the 1980s when the message got out that we needed to reduce the intake of saturated fat in our diets. Put simply, this meant cutting back on the amount of full fat dairy foods, red meat and processed foods we were eating.

In order to compensate for the reduction of animal fats that were being used, unsaturated vegetable oils needed to be altered as a substitute to make lower-fat food products feasible. Sugar content also had to increase significantly in these product types for an enjoyable taste and texture to continue. As empty calories, sugar carries no nutritional benefits for the body and as a result, contributes to weight gain and obesity. Fat mimicking chemicals that are pumped into processed foods are still recognised by the body as sugars, forcing the body to store them as fat to be burned as energy at a later stage.

Moral Of The Story
Large food manufactures couldn’t care less about the health of their customers. They operate to makesales and will take drastic action to deceive shoppers in any way possible to ensure they continue buying their brands. Have you ever wondered why fresh fruit and vegetables are not advertised to the same extent as Kit Kats and Coca Cola? Retailers know they are not as profitable and attempt to swoon shoppers with cheap processed foods to get foot traffic in the door!

If your goal is to lose weight or maintain a healthy diet, cutting sugar intake and preparing fresh, wholesome meals will have a life changing effect on your lifestyle and energy levels.
